Many people dream of leaving their “regular” jobs and finding something that they can do from home. This desire seems to grow in the winter. After all, who wouldn’t rather slip into a warm robe and slippers to review the days work rather than go out and have to scrape your car out of the ice and snow to drive to work? There are a lot of positives to working at home, but it isn’t all a day at the beach. Especially if you are considering quitting your job to work at home, you should have a full grasp of what to expect.

Starting any new career, including working at home is going to take time to build up. A decision must be made first on what it is you are going to do at home. It may be affiliate marketing, selling online, freelance writing, or a variety of other things. It is suggested that before you quit your job, you make this decision and at least work at it part time for a while.

Remember that when you work from home, no taxes are normally taken out of your pay. However, the Government does expect you to pay your taxes. Keep all business related receipts including those you get online for websites and such. If you are working from home, you are considered to be running your own business. Talk to an accountant or tax specialist if you have any questions. Keep everything.

If you aren’t already, you will have to train yourself to be self disciplined. Working at home takes a lot of it. Procrastinating only leads you into trouble. It is still a job, even though you are at home. Treat it as such. You are your own boss. Would you tolerate an employee who spent working hours chatting online or surfing the net? If not, then you should not tolerate it for yourself. There is work time and play time. Set the boundaries carefully.

In most cases, unless you have to make deadlines, you can take a day off whenever you want. Of course, you will have to work doubly hard the next day because this is your business we are talking about. You should be able to enjoy setting your own hours and days, but be realistic about how much work you have to do.

That being said, working from home can be fun and a lot less hassle than going out to work for someone else everyday. Do your homework and research to discover what it is you want to do from home and then follow your dream. If you want to work from home but do not want the responsibility of owning your own business, you can still check out tele-commuting jobs that allow you to be employed by a company but work from home.
