Do Affiliate Links Pay When AI Sends the Buyer?
More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Copilot or Perplexity what to buy before they ever see a review. If one of them buys a product you promote, do you get paid? Sometimes. It depends on exactly how the buyer reached the checkout.
An AI assistant does not pay you by itself. When ChatGPT, Copilot or Perplexity links straight to a product page, that link carries no affiliate tag, and nobody earns the commission. You get paid in three situations: the assistant cites your page and the reader clicks your link from it, the reader types your personal code at checkout, or the reader clicked your link earlier and your cookie is still valid when they buy.
OpenAI pulled back from in chat checkout in March 2026 and went back to sending shoppers to the merchant's site. That keeps affiliate credit possible. The programs that suit this new path are the ones that credit a code and give long cookie windows.
Why this question matters now
A year ago, most buyers who read a review clicked straight through from it. Today a growing share ask an assistant first. They type a question such as “which email tool should a small newsletter use”, read a summary, and click whatever the answer links to. Sometimes that is your review. Often it is the product itself.
Affiliate tracking was built for the first world, where the reader moved from your page to the merchant in one step. It still works, but only along certain paths. Knowing which ones decides whether the sales you helped create are credited to you or quietly go unpaid.
Who gets credit, path by path
Every AI assisted purchase follows one of these routes. The table shows who earns the commission on each and why.
| How the buyer reached checkout | Who is credited | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AI answer links straight to the product | The merchant | The link carries no affiliate tag, so nobody is credited |
| AI cites your review, reader clicks your link | You | Your page is the source, and your tracked link sets the cookie |
| Reader types your code at checkout | You, on programs that credit codes | The code is tied to your account, whatever route the buyer took |
| Reader clicked your link weeks ago, then asks AI and buys | You, if your cookie is still valid | The original click is inside the window and no later link replaced it |
| AI shopping feature with its own partner links | The AI company | The platform earns the commission, not the publisher |
Two of the five routes pay you only if you planned for them. A code pays whatever path the buyer took, and a long cookie pays for the reader who found you first and asked an assistant later. The other routes are decided by whether your page is the one the assistant quotes.
What changed when ChatGPT dropped in chat checkout
For a while it looked as if assistants would complete purchases themselves. ChatGPT tested an Instant Checkout that let a buyer pay without leaving the chat, with OpenAI taking a small fee on each sale. For affiliates that was the worst case, because a purchase finished inside the chat left no click on the merchant's site to carry anyone's tracking.
In March 2026 OpenAI pulled back from native in chat checkout and returned to a referral and redirect flow, sending shoppers to the merchant to buy. Industry coverage put it down to low use: very few people chose to finish a purchase inside an answer. For publishers that restores the old rule. If the buyer lands on the merchant's site through your link, or types your code there, you can still be paid.
The practical lesson: the buyer still ends up on the merchant's own checkout. Every tool that credits you at that checkout, a code, a long cookie, a link from a page the assistant cites, is worth more in 2026 than it was two years ago.
Programs that credit you without a fresh click
The strongest protection against an AI detour is a program that credits something other than the last click. These are examples from our directory, with each rule taken from the program's own terms.
| Program | How it credits you |
|---|---|
| Because of You | A code entered before checkout takes precedence over any saved link |
| FractalCycles | A personal discount code credits the sale even without a click |
| HART | Commission is credited through your link or your coupon code |
| OpenFate | No cookie at all; a recorded click before signup makes the customer yours permanently |
A code is the most useful of these, because it travels with the buyer. A reader who hears your code in a video, then asks an assistant to compare three tools, then buys the one you recommended, still pays you if they type your code. Say it out loud, put it on screen, and put it in the first line of your description.
Cookie windows, by the numbers
A cookie is the other half of the answer. If a reader clicks your link, asks an assistant for a second opinion, and buys three days later, you are paid only if the cookie lasts longer than three days and no other affiliate's link replaced yours in between.
| Measure | Programs in our directory |
|---|---|
| Programs that state a cookie window | 184 |
| Median cookie window | 45 days |
| 90 days or more | 56 |
| Less than 30 days | 6 |
The longer the buying decision, the more the window matters. Software, courses and travel are all considered purchases, often compared across several sessions, and more of those sessions now include an assistant. Our cookie duration statistics break the windows down by category.
How to be the page the assistant cites
The best AI assisted sale is the one where the assistant quotes your page and links to it. Assistants favour pages that answer one question plainly, with facts they can lift and a source they can name.
- Answer the question in the first paragraph. The short answer at the top of a page is the part assistants quote most.
- Use real numbers. Commission rates, prices, cookie lengths and dates are what assistants repeat. Vague praise is not.
- Keep facts current and dated. An assistant that finds a stale rate may cite a competitor instead.
- Put your tracked link next to the facts. A reader who arrives from an assistant is ready to act, so the link should be one scroll away.
- Give every product one clear verdict. Assistants summarise. A page that says who a product suits and who it does not is easy to summarise accurately.
An AI assistant is a new step between your reader and the checkout, not a replacement for affiliate links. Its own links do not pay you, but it can send readers to your page, and the buyer still finishes on the merchant's site, where your code and your cookie work.
Promote programs that credit codes and give long windows, write pages an assistant would want to quote, and the sales that start in a chat window can still be yours.
Sort every verified program by cookie length, commission and payout terms.

Links in ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity answers carry no affiliate tag, so affiliates earn on AI assisted sales only through a cited page, a personal code, or a cookie that is still valid. The median affiliate cookie in the AffiliateJob directory is 45 days.
